Yes...dd does work for this.

One problem is that if you are doing this to have an image in case
your hard drive crashes, you may need a hard drive of identical
geometry in order to restore the dd'd image.

Even harddrives of the same size and same model number and same
manufacturer have an awful tendency to be slightly different under
the covers....so this is not the best backup method, but can be
useful...
