Since you are probably still handling Windows *clients* I would suggest setting one of your samba servers to handle domain logons and have a look at the "unix password sync" option. It's been a while since I have been playing with samba, but digging into /etc/smb.conf (very well commented) and doing some testing on a few computer test network should get you where you want to be.
