Ed -thanks for the tip, one of my other linux buddies told me the same thing
this morning. I guess now I understand why linuxconf is so bad... I will
definitely look into removing linuxconf and just figuring out the commands
the old fashion way...

I was also recommened to try www.webmin.com, I guess it does the same thing
as linuxconf but its way more stable, and does everything from a normal
browser. Basically once installed open Nutsrpae, Mozilla or whatever go
enter:
http://127.0.0.1:10000
enter youre root passwd and youre off. You can thank Mark C for that tip!

Anyway, thanks again!

See you on the list.

DK

THAT'S EXACTLY how LinuxConf can be nasty.

When using Linuxconf, a lot of users have their boot-up sequence set with
linuxconf loading at startup. You can see this when it says 'running
linuxconf hooks'. At this point it CAN and usually does modify manually
edited config files back to what you set in LinuxConf.

This may be a good thing for some users, but it's the main reason I dropped
linuxconf as soon as I learned to do things by hand. It always caught me
unawares.

The one thing I used it for was setting up ppp interfaces. It was nice to be
able to just put in a phone number, user name and password and hey presto!
pppx fully configured and can be run with 'ifup pppx'.

Theres no replacement I'm aware of currently for console modes. I have to
create all the /etc/sysconfig scripts manually everytime (or transfer them
between machines using floppies or the like). That rather sucks.

If I had a bit more time I would write a little program to do this
automagically, and tie it in with WvDial as well, but who has time nowadays?

Anyway, glad you got things sorted.

Regards,
Ed.
