I'm trying to compile mrtg on my RH 6.2 machine. Here's what I get
when I compile mrtg-2.8.11-2.src.rpm from the Powertools 6.2:

checking for gcc... gcc
checking whether the C compiler (gcc -O2 -march=i386 -mcpu=i686 ) works... yes
checking whether the C compiler (gcc -O2 -march=i386 -mcpu=i686 ) is a
cross-compiler... no
checking whether we are using GNU C... yes

Here is what I get when I try to compile mrtg-2.9.17-3.src.rpm from
the Valhalla CDs:

checking for gcc... gcc
checking whether the C compiler (gcc -O2 -march=i386 -mcpu=i686 ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create
executables.
error: Bad exit status from /home/seyman/rpmbuild/tmp/rpm-tmp.37152 (%build)

Can anybody explain this?
Why does the same instruction work in one case and not another?

Emmanuel
