More questions than answers, unfortunately.
Why 2.4.7-10? You don't mention what release you are running, but for Red 
Hat 7.1/7.2 , the current kernel is at kernel-2.4.9-34.

Why are you recompiling? Iptables support is built into the stock kernel. 
Just turn of ipchains, if it is running, remove the modules, if loaded, 
and you should be able to load the iptables modules.

As for the errors, what did you begin with for a .config file? You can use 
the ones in /usr/src/linux-2.4/configs/ as a start. They are the ones 
used by Red Hat to build the stock kernels. Just choose the one for your 
arch, and copy it to /usr/src/linux-2.4/.config.
