Hello all,

This is a very strange situation I've never encountered before. Both
the root account and user account become inaccessible. Needless to say,
without root there is little that can be done to fix the problem - I
always have to do a complete re-install.

OS: Redhat 7.3
Hardware: Sony PCG-GR5E/BP (Mobile PIII 1Ghz, 512MB RAM, 40GB HDD)
Desktop: KDE 3.0 (save settings on exit)
Languages: English, Japanese (locale set to Japanese)
Additional Packages: Win4Lin 4.0

What happens is, if I shutdown X, and one of my shells has su'd to root,
then logout, the user account AND root account are inaccessible. This
is from a telnet, normal login or a su command (su reports wrong
password, which is how I came to the conclusion that the password was
the problem).

Other users are not affected, they can log in and do whatever just fine.
Only the user that was logged in and had the shell that was currently
su'd as root, and root itself are affected.

This does not happen every time. It appears to be random, but I have
reproduced the error 3 times making it more than coincidence.

The only applications I have running at the time are xload and two
KShells.

Has anyone come across this problem before?

Any feedback would be good.

Thanks =)
