Hi! I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop, with the following stats: Pentium 4 1800 MHz 512 Mb RAM 15,1 in UXGA screen NVIDIA GeForce4 Go 64 Mb graphics adapter 40 Gb harddrive
I also bought the Unlimited Edition Red Hat Linux 7.2 Bible, with Linux 7.2 software included. I installed it as per the instructions on a 3,6 Gb partition on the aforementioned laptop. I quickly found out that the X GUI did not work, because of my graphics adapter. So, I tried updating the NVIDIA kernel with the latest .rpm's from NVIDIA, I even used the NVchooser.sh utility to make sure I got the right files. First I tried installing this rpm: NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-2960.rh72smp_2.4.9_31.i686.rpm I got the answer that this rpm needed the 2.4.13 kernel. So, I downloaded the 2.4.18-5 kernel(didn't find 2.4.13) and tried to install that. I got a message saying that this kernel needed the Modutils 2.4.13 or higher. So I downloaded the Modutils 2.4.16-1.i386.rpm and installed that. This went totally ok! Then I installed the 2.4.18-5 kernel, and that went ok too, according to the results. Although, I got a message saying it didn't manage to write to two files wich (stupid) I did not write down the names of. Finally, I installed first this rpm: NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-2960.rh72smp_2.4.9_31.i686.rpm and then: NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-2960.i386.rpm This all seemed to go smoothly. I then ran Xconfigurator, but no matter what setting I chose, startx would not pop open..... I rebooted, and started up again, and suddenly I couldn't mount my cd, being informed that "this is not a valid block device" or something like that. And that is were I stand! Right, I'm obviously not a Linux-expert, this is the first time I've dealt with it. I'm a lot more comfortable with Windows and so on. Also, my laptop is not connected to the internet, and won't be for a while, meaning I have to download files on another computer, burning them on a cd, and then running them on my laptop. So, does anyone have any idea what's wrong here? What am I doing wrong, what should I do? Thanks in advance, Olav ______________________________________________________ Få den nye Yahoo!
