I have a question regarding runlevel 5 vs. 3 and Linux version
2.2.14-5.0.14b when burning a cd.

I was backing up my hard drive using multiCD 1.6.3, a Linux perl script
available at freshmeat.net, I've backed up my machine with it every other
week for a year and a half without a problem, going through up to 14 discs
when doing a full backup.

Recently, I changed /etc/inittab so that initdefault is runlevel 5,
instead of 3, to load gdm, the Gnome login manager.

It appears that at runlevel 5, when cdrecord was "Fixating..." a disk,
burning the CD failed. The first time, I got through a few disks, and then
on Disc 4, it died. From that point forward, I tried rebooting the machine
and various other things -- killing X and other applications, to no avail.
On each first disk from then on, it failed.

Only when I changed back the initdefault to runlevel 3 and rebooted, did
everything work as before and I was able to do a 7-disc backup. I am
*assuming*, therefore, that this was the problem. I was again running it
under X with my other apps loaded as before.

I googled some newsgroups and noticed a patch for the kernel, I think
version 2.2.16, but it was unclear to me if this was the same problem as
mine and if it would only happen at runlevel 5.

Other info: the Sony CD-RW CRX145S drive, cdrecord version 1.8, KDE 1.1.2.

Does anyone know anything about this and could you shed some light on
my experience? Any thoughts, info much appreciated.
