I installed FreeS/WAN 1.98b on RedHat 7.3 for the first time on Tuesday and it worked without a hitch. I did have some problems when I hacked some of the IPsec code and re-built it after changing which things were modules and which weren't but IMHO those problems were of my making. Based on that and the fact that you changed some configuration values I'm guessing that sticking as close as possible to the default configuration values would be your best bet if you want to continue to build your own FreeS/WAN on RedHat 7.3.
