Instead of typing "linux" at boot, you can type "linux single" which
will get you to a root prompt where you can use the passwd command
to change the root password.

P.S.: I'ld be *very* careful about a changed password on an FTP server.



If you are not able to log into the single user mode ...
As you are imagining, there is a way to change the password by mounting thru
CDrom and mounting the root file system.
Then go to /etc and vi passwd file to remove the "x" entry for the user'root'
thereby telling the system that look this user doesnt have any password.
Save this passwd file.
Now remove the cdrom. Rboot the system and login to the user "root "
It will allow u to enter without asking for the password..

And then create the password for this user !!
