I thought I would try updating the kernel on the 7.3 box with up2date instead of removing it from the list in the alert notification tool.
Everything worked ok, but when I tried to start X it didn't work. So I ran Xconfigurator, still didn't work. Move some stuff like .Xauthority, .gnome* etc. till I found the culprit, ~/.xinitrc! Now why did having an /empty/ .xinitrc file have to do with X starting when it was working before? I moved .xinitrc to .xinitrc.old and X works again! Ok, fixed read on... Nautilus has always been slow as hell and rpm seems very slow to install or update packages at times, anyone else have this problem? I have a 7.3 ALL updates, 500mhz AMD and Radeon Mad Dog vid card with 32mb and plenty of ram... $ cat meminfo total: used: free: shared: buffers: cached: Mem: 461115392 289759232 171356160 0 9568256 156614656 Swap: 1073397760 0 1073397760 MemTotal: 450308 kB MemFree: 167340 kB MemShared: 0 kB Buffers: 9344 kB Cached: 152944 kB SwapCached: 0 kB Active: 228380 kB Inact_dirty: 1820 kB Inact_clean: 10360 kB Inact_target: 48112 kB HighTotal: 0 kB HighFree: 0 kB LowTotal: 450308 kB LowFree: 167340 kB SwapTotal: 1048240 kB SwapFree: 1048240 kB Committed_AS: 178104 kB nautilus was slow all along and even with the old video card.
