    This might not work for you, but I had a similar problem a while back.  I
posted about it and got no replies back, but I figured out a solution.  My
system has both IDE and SCSI in it, and RH7.3 wouldn't load up my AHA1542CP.
It kept bitching about DMA problems.  No matter what I did to the card, RH just
flat out refused to work with it.  Ironically, it worked fine under RH7.2.

    I recompiled the 7.3 kernel and turned OFF Plug and Play support and voila,
the card came to life.  Everything's happy now.  Of course, this wouldn't help
you if all you have are SCSI cards.  But it might be worth it to find an old
2Gb IDE laying around somewhere.
