Hi, You may use tight vnc tunneled through ssh, and use ssh (-C) encryption (ssh gui should have this option too).
tight vnc http://www.tightvnc.com/ vnc with ssh http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/sshvnc.html If it is possible, you should better not login as root, but su on the other computer.
