Bus mastering, burst rates, CPU loads duplexing, latency etc. etc. etc.

Yes, in my experience, generally an expensive one performs better.

Meaning 3Com or Intel for example.

Our rule of thumb at this company is Intel in servers with higher loads,
D-Link in workstations with lower loads.
