It sounds like you want to transfer a file from your Linux box to your
Windows box so you can edit it, then transfer it back to the Linux box.

You've probably been trying to use vi. It's a powerful editor, but I would
not recommend it to a Windows user. SSH into the Linux box and try using
mcedit. It is included in the "mc" RPM. It works a lot like the DOS EDIT
utility and should be easy for you to use.

You can transfer files back and forth to your Winbox, but you will need to
either setup FTP or Samba, and remote root access to do it. Using mcedit
over SSH is a both simpler and more secure.
