I'm new to Linux (very new (3 weeks)) and am trying to migrate my
office network from Microsoft to Linux technologies. Here's my current
setup and goal (questions follow).
I have a computer running Win2K Server (name: DECERNO) functioning as my
Router+NAT/DNS(caching)/DHCP server. It's connected to the internet on a
public IP address and to my network on a private IP address (192.168.1.1).
I have a RedHat 7.2 computer (name: INITIUM) to replace it that now runs
Samba for print and WINS (easy & awesome!) and I would like to setup the
Router+NAT features of Linux (which as I understand rock) I plan to also
used BIND as a caching name server on this machine as well as make it my
DHCP server soon (but these I think I can handle).
Heres' what I done so far to try to get Routing+NAT to work
Modified /etc/sysconfig/networking-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 to setup my internal
adapter
Modified /etc/sysconfig/networking-scripts/ifcfg-eth1 to setup my external
adapter
Modified /etc/sysctl.conf with "net.ipv4.ip_forward=1"
The computer can now ping internal and external but if I set a computer to
use the Linux box as a router the packets only make it to INITIUM, but not
past it to the internet.
I've been up and down in the RedHat online documentation (these are good!)
but haven't found my answer. I would like to use iptables as my firewall as
well.
So my questions are:
1) Where are the config files for Routing and/or NAT?
2) Where are the good docs to read?
3) Can someine provide a link to some docs that explain setup?
Also:
I'm documenting all of my issues and setup config as well as cost
and all this other good stuff for my migration so I can put it into a book.
If you reply please let me know if I can use the information you provided in
my book.
