at the grub screen select the kernal you want to boot , press e, select
the line that has the kernel parameters on it I forget which one press
e, at the end of the line typ 1 or single back out and press b for
boot. The instructions are actually on the grub screen to pass
parameteres to the kernel.

You will then be placed at a prompt ( no password required) and can
follow the intructions already given on setting a password. I would
probably just enter passwd and enter a new password. exit will reboot
the machine as normal.
