If I understand your question correctly, you need to edit /etc/syslog.conf
and comment out all lines that end in "/dev/console" (those are the ones
telling the syslog daemon to write to the console), then restart syslogd (I
use "/etc/rc.d/init.d/syslog restart" - there is an easier command, but I
keep forgetting its name...).
