The examples you mentioned seem to indicate something with some gaming potential; my ATI Radeon really did work "out of the box." The only thing I can't be sure about is whether or not the VIVO abilities of my card do as well (I'm not particularly concernced, hence havn't tried). Otherwise, watching DVDs is also a great experience.
Another brand fully supported is Matrox; if you spend more time reading text than fragging I highly recommend it especially with the g400 and g500 series. Again, "working out of the box"-ness should be fine. The latest hydra series (?) I'm not too sure about though.
