Have you tried downgrading to 7.2?

I know the Tecras worked pretty well with the 6.x series.  Are you running
the stock Red Hat kernel, or did you compile your own?  Typically, Red Hat
does a lot of QA work on the kernels, so if you are compiling your own
that could be part of the problem.

You might try running X unaccelereated, but renicing the X process.

Do, as root:

renice -20 WHATEVERTHEPIDOFXHAPPENSTOBE

You might also renice your window manager and/or your panel.
