The symlink shouldn't matter, but im not 100% sure about it (anyone)

you should be able to just cd to /lib/modules/2.4.7-10 and mkdir build

here is mine, even though I am running RH 7.3, it should still be the same.

[dmcglone@Buddy dmcglone]$ cd /lib/modules/2.4.18-3
[dmcglone@Buddy 2.4.18-3]$ ls
>>>>>>build<<<<<<<<        modules.generic_string  modules.parportmap  
modules.usbmap
kernel       modules.ieee1394map     modules.pcimap      pcmcia
modules.dep  modules.isapnpmap       modules.pnpbiosmap
[dmcglone@Buddy 2.4.18-3]$

the "build" dir is the first one.
