Bill Joy created vi in about 1976 by adding curses to ed. I
was using VT52 terminals attached to PDP/11's at about this
time and they had arrow keys.

Just a side note... Bill joy gave an interview in the mid
80's stating that EMACS was a better editor, because of it's
programability and modeless design.
