I will see about trying mem86 but also is there any way I can set it
up so that I can find out where the problem is coming from

I have replaced gcc with RH7.2 version and problem is reduced but not
eliminated

As I see it the change could be due to

glibc
kernel 
kernel headers (glibc-headers package)
gcc
make
ld
cpp

So it would be useful tobe able to log?  where the problem is coming
from.
