Ciao, we have installed the RH7.2 Professional Linux OS (registered on RH site, with userid goceevo, Product ID=b6e4-59a9-8da3-6cde) on a Compaq Evo W6000 equipped with: one Xeon processor (motherboard for two processors), 2 GB of Rimm memory, 2 SCSI HD, DVD reader and CD-RW, Nvidia Quadro graphics card Intel Eepro100 ethernet card.
Everything was automatically recognised at install time with no problems. After the installation we had some problems with up2date, (python crash), but downloading packages from your update site, and updating kernel to 2.4.9-31 (and the other packages) by hands, we obtained a "quasi-comfortable" workstation: now everything works fine (networking, burning CDs, up2date, gcc, tex, gimp, etc...), but it is not possible importing/exporting graphics applications/sessions such as a simple nedit without random hanging the workstation. The strange thing is that the OS hangs without any message on the console or in /var/log files; I presume it may be something related to the graphics card (or ethernet card?), but I'm not sure. Since I had to turn off inot the bios the instructions related to energy saving, which induced sometime the system to sleep, I tried to use also the noapic kernel command into the grub.conf file, but it did not improve the situation. Then we downloaded the Nvidia rpm's for RH7.2, and updated the XF86Config-4 file according to Nvidia istructions, hoping to solve the problems, but nothing changed: the workstation is still properly working only and only if no-one attempts to import/export graphics. For example, I enabled XDMCP, but if someone tries to use the linux machine from an X-terminal (or a PC with your cygnus+Xfree installed), after the KDM login the user produces a crash of the Gnu/Linux workstation in a random number of seconds (it is not a deterministic process!). Actually it is the first time I have such problems with a RH Linux workstation, and I have no idea about the origin of tis problem. I have not found similar problems in the FAQ of RH site, may anyone give me some hints about this problem?
