Okay. Done and all's well, but I now have a weird problem. When I do:

rpm -qa | grep kernel, I get:

kernel-2.4.18-3
kernel-smp-2.4.7-10
kernel-smp-2.4.7-10
kernel-doc-2.4.18-3
kernelcfg-0.6-9
kernel-source-2.4.18-3
kernel-ibcs-2.2.16-22

Note two instances of the smp kernel. If I attempt to erase one, I get
a message saying kernel-smp-2.4.7-10 "specifies multiple packages"

If I look in /boot and/or do a locate vmlinuz (after having run
updatedb), I get:

/boot/vmlinuz
/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18-3
/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18-3smp
/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18-3bigmem

I also did an rpm rebuild of the database.

So, no trace of the smp kernel. Yet, rpm reports two instances of it as
installed.

Anyone know what's going on here? FWIW, the machine's working just
fine.
