As an aside, the APIC issue is a kernel problem (or a problem with the APIC controller on single CPUs, don't know which). I first encountered it in the SuSE 2.4.10 stock kernel and had to disable it with a kernel option. The SuSE 8.0 2.4.18 non-SMP kernel has it disabled by default now.
