This should be considered mandatory if your system doesn't have enough firewalls in front of it to block the bad guys. A Linksys or other DSL/Cable router/firewall doesn't hurt either. Low cost, and by default, all incoming access is blocked.
I don't know if you've read any articles from the HoneyPot project yet. These guys will set up systems out of the box without downloading security fixes and see how long it takes to get hacked. It's typically under an hour! When I first got cable modem access, I saw multiple international connection attempts in under a day. > Have you tried Krispy Kreme yet?
