Boot into runlevel 3 

login as normal user 
su to root 

su -

run mouseconfig

select proper mouse

exit root shell

start x using startx

If it still pukes, pay attention to what is on the screen and  look in
/var/log/XFree86.0.log for anything obvious.

This usually works for me.
