When you compile and install a package this way, RPM knows nothing about 
it. The application _is_ installed, but since it wasn't installed via 
rpm, it isn't in the rpm database.

I use the command line. It probably gives you more control than the GUI 
tools. I've never used the GUI rpm tools, so I can't debate the 
differences.
