A lot of times these are set via a gtk theme. The fonts chosen might
actually be broken or non-existant. You may have a file name ~/.gtkrc in
your home directory. If so, try renaming it to something else, log out,
log in and see if it fixes the problem.

Barring that, there are some tricks that can be performed with
xdefaults. I'd have to dig them up if that's needed because I haven't
tried using them in a long, long time.
