The Athlon kernel is optimized for the Athlon CPU.
If your main board is compliant with the specs, this is a win.

If it isn't, well, then it'll be a less than happy experience.

That said, I'm using the Athlon kernel here with a XP-1600 on a Asus 
A7V266 main board. Works wonderfully, I've had no problems at all.

You don't get to find out if your main board is compliant, for one. :)
