hello, the best way under your cirucmstances of reducing hacking would be to put both- the web server and the mail server on the DMZ zone which would be the safest way to safegaurd both your internal network and the servers which are on de-militarized zone .you can go through some of the sample DMZ firewall scripts to understand how to set up one.(just google search)
