You would do better to ask this quesion on the xine-user list, here:

        http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/xine-user

They will want to know what version of xine you're using, what type of
file the video is, and a transcript of the output from the xine command.

And note in advance that Sorenson AVI files (the commonest AVI format
on the web) do not play in xine because the vermin selling the format
won't issue a general purpose decoder or data format spec. There is some
propect of being able to use the relevant Windows DLLs to accomplish
things for that format, but not yet.
