this is pretty easy to get around though.  you can download gcc-2.95-3, 
compile and install to /usr/local, then compile mplayer with PATH = 
/usr/local:$PATH make.  then just do a make uninstall to remove gcc-2.95-3.

if there is no uninstall target for gcc, then just have it install to 
/home/whatever/my_temp, make mplayer with PATH = /home/whatever/my_temp:$PATH 
make, and then just delete /home/whatever/my_temp and whatever else 
gcc-2.95-3 installed.
