most linksys routers have a scope setting that start assigning
dhcp addresses at xxx.xxxx.xxx.100. other than xxx.xxx.xxx.1 and .2, the lower
block is available for static ip address assignments. one strange practice these
boxes have, is, once a given mac address gets an ip address thru dhcp, that
address is tied up until a hard reset is done on the linksys. got a 1000+
network of car dealers on my network, and probably 50-100 are getting outside
internet access through a linksys router and dsl. great product as it allows a
static ip route statement to send normal internet traffic out the dsl path and
traffic pointed to our vpn circuit down the supplied fractional t1. considering
that we've got linux 6.2 machines in each of these dealers running apache as a
proxy caching server and caching bind dns servers, we've got more than closely
familiar with what's out there! by the way, the default first three octets
in the ip range are 192.168.1.x. I'm running one of their 8 port boxes here at
home, distributing a cable modem connection.
