A tarball is a file that has been compressed using a program named "tar."  It 
will have an extension of .tar or .tar.bz2 or .tar.gz  Do man tar to see how 
to use it.  

An rpm is a redhat compatible file that can be installed on a redhat system.  
It has an extension of .rpm.  See man rpm to see how to use it.   Usually you 
will type "rpm  -ivh name-of-package.rpm"
