Put XP in the master drive, linux in the slave. The boot loader should be in the MBR of the master drive. I'd prefer LILO and/or Grub, just because of familiarity. Last time I tried dual boot this way, it worked like a charm (using GRUB, RedHat 7.2), with no extra configuration needed.
