I'm running an enigma system with kernel 2.4.9-31 on an ASUS A7V motherboard
at BIOS revision 1010a and I'm having some trouble with my USB.

I'm trying to use an Epson scanner in it, but it seems that the USB system
gets all messed up when the scanner is plugged in at boot time.

There also seems to be some issue with USB bus 2 on this motherboard, but I've
not fully gathered info on this issue yet.

Is there a reason not to have USB devices (specifically a scanner) when the
system boots? Is this perhaps a known problem with A7V motherboards?

What I have for info is this:

I have manually removed the scanner and usb-uhci modules from the kernel. I
have disconnected the scanner from the bus. When I "modprobe usb-uhci"
(usbcore is still loaded), I get the following:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Apr 15 07:48:42 brutus kernel: usb-uhci.c: $Revision: 1.259 $ time 08:31:55

Which seems fine except perhaps for the sharing of IRQ 9, but they are both
USB controllers, so that's probably not a problem. Now, I plug the scanner
into USB Bus 1, and I get:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Apr 15 07:51:26 brutus kernel: hub.c: USB new device connect on bus1/2,
assigned device number 2
Apr 15 07:51:26 brutus kernel: usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x4b8/0x110) is

Apr 15 07:51:26 brutus kernel: usb.c: registered new driver usbscanner
Apr 15 07:51:26 brutus kernel: scanner.c: USB Scanner support registered.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So far, so good. lsmod shows that the usbcore, usb-uhci, and scanner are all
loaded. Cool.

"cat /proc/bus/usb/devices" gives me:

Which is good, I think. We have two USB UHCI root hubs, (S/Ns b000 and b400),
a generic USB hub (when I'm having problems, this entry doesn't show up), and
an EPSON scanner.

However, I get "Can't locate module char-major-81", but that seems to be about
radio* and video* devices, so that might be unrelated...

I have problems when the scanner is plugged into bus 2 or if the scanner is
plugged in on a reboot. I can gather info on that, but I don't want to make
this message any longer that it already is...

My question is: Is it normal for the USB devices to have to be disconnected
when the USB modules load for things to work right (when the scanner is
plugged in, the scanner modules doesn't even load)?

Thanks!

-Michael
