Weird, even though I had done a fresh reboot before doing the below, doing a 2nd
reboot solved the problems.  Any guesses what could have happened?  On the
reboot before the below, I realize the X login prompt was there for an hour or so
before anyone logged into the computer (it's only used by me).  Does a delayed
login cause problems?
