If you only have a dialup interface, make sure your hosts file includes this: 127.0.0.1 myhostname localhost localhost.localdomain If you have a static IP address, then assign your real hostname to the static IP address: 127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain 192.168.1.1 myhostname.localdomain myhostname If you don't have an entry in /etc/hosts for your machine, and you don't have DNS available, then some network programs (like gdm) will not be able to resolve the hostname Tony - -- Anthony E.
