Since the original poster seemed to be used to the 'rm -rdf directory'
command and it didn't work in this case, I thought it would be appropriate
to answer with the answer as to why it didn't work.  It's in the man page:

       -d, --directory
              unlink  directory,  even  if  non-empty (super-user
              only)

... it only works for the super-user.
