As I keep preaching, if all your data and custom software live on a separate filesystem, and you scrupulously back up /etc, you can mix and match not only Red Hat versions, but Linux distributions or even operating systems without much hassle. And, as I also keep preaching, if you _can't_ do this, you're at the mercy of vendor's whims.
