I don't know why, but this is what worked for me when I upgraded to 7.2:

In /etc/modules.conf---

alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias ppp_compress-26 ppp_deflate
alias tty-ldisk-3 ppp_async
alias char-major-108 ppp_async


Check your messages file--I think you'll find pppd is looking for
tty-ldis-3.
