I suggest you check out mailscanner. It comes as an rpm package and requires no modification of sendmail (or whatever MTA you're using). It can be set up to use one or several of the virus engines including McAfee, Sophos, and at least a half a dozen other professional packages. The main drawback is that those professional pcakages are priced for companies not home users. However, Frisk Software (F-Prot) now allows their unix package to be used free of charge for home users. I installed a simple little script that updates the virus definitions daily from their website. Mailscanner also works with spamassassin to identify spam. Since I started using mailscanner at home I've screened out several viruses and eliminated virtually all spam.
