 As mentioned elsewhere, a good way to do a wholesale "improvement"
like this is actually to put the original CD in and try to do an
"upgrade" ... I suspect this may not work so well after a number
of errata have been applied though.

 Good choices for packages to start the ball rolling (i.e. which will
help you start finding the dependencies) would be control-center, or
gnome-core.  You'll also need to pick out the applications you want to
have available e.g Gnumeric or whatever.

 Start by trying something like "rpm -Uvh gnome-core-*" and then for
each dependency that's reported, add the missing packages until you
find a set that will install without error.

 up2date should do this and in fact might be a better bet, if you have
a fast Internet connection.  I believe there is a way to point up2date
at a "spool" directory with the packages in, but I'll leave details to
be filled in by someone who knows how to do it :o)
