I haven't tried it, but I can't think of any inherent reason why it

You've now hit on one of the exact reasons that I think product
activation is a truly irritating thing.  Microsoft has promised to
play nice and allow you to reactivate following hardware changes, so
in theory even if the XP activation codes lock the XP machine you
should be able to get it back.  Of course, it is likely that you'll
have to call in every time you switch back and forth.

Try news://news.vmware.com, there is a quite extensive archive
available.  If you're not already used to reading Usenet postings,
my favorite tools are Netscape or Mozilla.  You can set up the
newsgroup server entry under Edit -> Preferences -> Mail&Newsgroups
-> NewsgroupServers.
