Got the ports working, thanks for the input all.  I did this as root
from the command line:

modprobe usbcore
modprobe usb-uhci
mount -t usbdevfs none /proc/bus/usb

Also added entries in console.perms for usb:

<usb>=/dev/usb
<console>  0660 <usb>  0600 root

Running usbview on with the camera on sees the usb hub and correctly
identifies the camera.

Now, how to properly set up /etc/fstab and modules.conf.  I'll have at
that tomorrow, but any thought appreciated.
