Amanda is excellent. You could use a vpn between the 2 machines which would give you the ability to mount nfs shares and would only require a single open port on the server to do so. Check out CIPE. If you have the space you could just copy all the files to the machine with the tape drive on it. Have cron start and stop the tunnel and services when you are backing up the machine.
