I must confess I'm a little ignorant on the memory utilization.
Would you mind telling me how I can gather information such as paging rates?
All the information I currently know is that the memory usage reported by
top shows that all the physical memory has been used and about 20 megs of
swap is being used. I'm not sure how accurate this information is. The
server is a fairly weak machine, PIII 550mhz, 128MB Ram, it's currently
serving about 20 people, with various NIS, NFS, and SAMBA requests.

One very big possibility is that the machine is becoming memory starved,
and then is spending all its cycles handling swapping/paging. This
desperation swapping is nasty but easy to fix; if it is the case more
memory is the cure.
