To put messages on the X screen at login, use

fortune | xmessage -file -

to put the box on the screen.

To make this part of the default login sequence on gnome, figure out
how the Gnome config file ( /usr/share/gnome/default.session) works
and add it.

BE VERY CAREFUL in a live environment, as it is quite possible to
rewrite this type of file to completely break GUI login. Do this on
a machine that other people aren't using, and have another way to
log in via ssh. You may also want to learn about "failsafe" mode.

If you want a fun challenge after this, figure out how to display
random fortune quotes in a box on the login screen. :-)
